Professor Simisola O. Akintola

Professor Simisola O. Akintola obtained her Bachelor of Laws from the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University in 1987 after which she proceeded to the Nigerian Law School and bagged her Barrister at Law in 1988. She had a Master’s Degree in Law from Obafemi Awolowo University and another Master’s Degree in Global health law from the Georgetown University, D.C. Her Ph.D thesis on “Future unspecified use of tissue and data in biobank research” was obtained from the University of Southampton, United Kingdom.

Professor Akintola is a professor of Health law at the Department of Private and Property Law, Faculty of Law, University of Ibadan, an Adjunct Professor at the College of Medicine of the same University, a Faculty Member at the Centre for Bioethics, Ashi, Ibadan, a co-investigator on the BridgElsi N.I. H project, a member of the special taskforce for African Union (A.U.,) on health data information exchange. Her research focus falls within the following areas: Intellectual Property, Health Law and Policy, Bioethics and Research Ethics with a special interest and emphasis on Genomic research and Biobanking, a novel and growing area of law which takes its root from a combination of Private Law, Health Law, Torts, Trusts and Human Rights Law.

Professor Akintola has examined several legal concepts which can be used for the regulation and advancement of ethical research as well as protect research participants. She has advocated for the use of the concept of Trust and Customary Law to foster a good governance model for genomic research particularly in Nigeria.

Professor Akintola is a Member of the West African Bioethics (WAB); she is a Fellow of Georgetown University Center for Clinical Bioethics. She is also a Fellow of the O’Neil Institute of Global Health Law and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators.

Professor Akintola has taught many courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. She teaches the Law of Torts, Land Law, Law of Equity and Trusts, Law of Evidence, Copyright Law, Law of Migration, and Bioethics and Law. She has also supervised many LL.B Long Essays and Master’s Projects.

Professor Akintola has over 50 publications in peer reviewed journals. She co-authored a book on Equity and Trusts in Nigeria with a colleague and has several chapters in edited books. She also authored articles that have appeared in Referred Conference Proceedings as well as Technical Reports and Monographs. She has, through her publications, contributed immensely to Scholarship.

In addition, she has held many administrative positions in the University both within and outside the Faculty. She was a member of the Institutional Review Board of her University and the Teaching Hospital for many years. She has also been involved in the advancement of knowledge in healthcare regulation and system in Nigeria. She has chaired so many committees. She participated in the development of the National Health Ethics Code for Nigeria as well as other institutional policies such as the intellectual property policy of the University of Ibadan and the Ethics policy of the same University.

Professor Akintola is an astute researcher who influences policies and regulations with her research works and administrative duties. Currently, she is the Dean, Faculty of Law.
